You Know Your Business – I Don’t
We’ve been debating as to whether we would like to go on a cruise sometime. It’s one of those things which we mention, perhaps two or three times a day for a few days, then something happens, work gets in the way and we don’t think about it again until we see an advertisement for a cruise, or one is mentioned during a television programme. I have also this week received several emails giving me details of engineering vacancies for subsea services, why, I don’t have a clue. I also occasionally receive emails giving details of cruises – at some point in the past I must have signed up for details, and now they randomly appear.
We do both think that we would enjoy a cruise, maybe for ten days. However I get terribly travel sick and over the past ten years or so, this has become worse. I used to have a major problem, as a child, with car sickness. Eventually we worked out that I was better when sitting in the front of the car. Once I was old enough to learn to drive that sorted the problem completely.
I understand that because of having to concentrate on something other than the journey and the possibility of being sick, then the feeling recedes, and there isn’t a problem. Unfortunately some years a mishap caused me to lose my eyesight amongst other problems. Things are a little better now, but I can’t drive and now the car sickness has returned. As we don’t travel too often this doesn’t really cause a problem. However, on a cruise would there be a problem – if so then I would prefer not to go!
Subsea services are part of an underwater world with many complex problems which I don’t pretend to understand. I’m sure that many other people will agree with these sentiments. The strange thing about the way the whole world works is that everyone else understands their business and everything within it – to them it is perfectly straightforward, yet again, someone else may come in and not understand that business at all.
We all co-exist in our own worlds which from time to time overlap for a short while. We learn things from other people whom we are dealing with in a business context. However, we may not actually know what their business is, and don’t understand it. In many cases, it is unnecessary to know the details.
Subsea services exist within the whole drilling and oil mining business. The work is complex, but only to outsiders, which is exactly as it should be. If everyone gets on with their own business whilst co-operating when needed with other companies then progress will be made in all matters.
