Cyprus is an idyllic island in the Mediterranean Sea with clear waters along sandy beaches. It is one of those places that have to be visited before the proverbial bucket is kicked. Cyprus received its independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. The majority of its inhabitants (at that time) were Greek, and the minority Turkish. These two clashed in 1974 and it resulted in the northern and eastern part of the island being inhabited by Turkish citizens. They then announced their territory as the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”. While the United Nations, and all other countries, only recognise the singular government of the Republic of Cyprus, Turkey insists on its declaration. Fortunately there have not been any public hostilities for some time.
There is the option to travel to the island by boat (or ferry) as well as the conventional way of plane. The main airport is situated in Larnaca, on the south of the island. Once there, transport is easy to find. Car hire in Cyprus is the easiest and most convenient way, but is regrettably the most expensive. Service taxis are available and the bus system has been upgraded to provide an effective and dependable service.
Cyprus has been labelled as the “island of the sun” because of its excellent weather. With about 340 days of sunshine each year, it is the perfect destination for vacation. Summer comes with splendid sunshine that is designed for the beach. Autumn gives calmness to the mind with scents of freshly harvested vines. In spring the flowers bloom to excite nature lovers. It is possible to visit Cyprus in any season and enjoy something unique.
There is much more to the Republic of Cyprus than great weather, expensive car hire and fascinating history but the full experience can only be encountered first hand. You Know Your Business – I Don’t
We’ve been debating as to whether we would like to go on a cruise sometime. It’s one of those things which we mention, perhaps two or three times a day for a few days, then something happens, work gets in the way and we don’t think about it again until we see an advertisement for a cruise, or one is mentioned during a television programme. I have also this week received several emails giving me details of engineering vacancies for subsea services, why, I don’t have a clue. I also occasionally receive emails giving details of cruises – at some point in the past I must have signed up for details, and now they randomly appear.
We do both think that we would enjoy a cruise, maybe for ten days. However I get terribly travel sick and over the past ten years or so, this has become worse. I used to have a major problem, as a child, with car sickness. Eventually we worked out that I was better when sitting in the front of the car. Once I was old enough to learn to drive that sorted the problem completely.
I understand that because of having to concentrate on something other than the journey and the possibility of being sick, then the feeling recedes, and there isn’t a problem. Unfortunately some years a mishap caused me to lose my eyesight amongst other problems. Things are a little better now, but I can’t drive and now the car sickness has returned. As we don’t travel too often this doesn’t really cause a problem. However, on a cruise would there be a problem – if so then I would prefer not to go!
Subsea services are part of an underwater world with many complex problems which I don’t pretend to understand. I’m sure that many other people will agree with these sentiments. The strange thing about the way the whole world works is that everyone else understands their business and everything within it – to them it is perfectly straightforward, yet again, someone else may come in and not understand that business at all.
We all co-exist in our own worlds which from time to time overlap for a short while. We learn things from other people whom we are dealing with in a business context. However, we may not actually know what their business is, and don’t understand it. In many cases, it is unnecessary to know the details.
Subsea services exist within the whole drilling and oil mining business. The work is complex, but only to outsiders, which is exactly as it should be. If everyone gets on with their own business whilst co-operating when needed with other companies then progress will be made in all matters.
Teaching Assistant Jobs and What They Entail
When it comes to working in teaching assistant jobs you will have to be enthusiastic and very energetic. Most teaching assistants will work in a particular classroom with the same teacher and the same group of children for a whole school year. Why your Suppliers Should Operate Under QMS iso 9001

A quality management system helps to ensure that everything runs smoothly with as few errors as possible. Verifiable QMS iso 9001 certification should be on your list of essential criteria when selecting a supplier, but if your supplier does not currently have a QMS standard, then it is up to you to either find a new supplier or insist that your current supplier conforms to this universal standard. On the other hand, you can also choose to continue using the services of a supplier that does not conform to an internationally recognized QMS if you have already received excellent service for a good amount of time.
Safety Concerns In The North Sea – Have We Learned Anything From Piper Alpha?
It is widely recognised that the offshore oil exploration industry is one of the most safety conscious in the UK. The risks however are considerable and not to be underestimated. The safety record of the whole industry was called into question after the Piper Alpha disaster off the coast of Scotland in 1988. With new technologies such as HPHT wells being considered for use in the North Sea, could Piper Alpha happen again?
The Piper Alpha disaster happened on 6 July 1988, when there was a massive explosion and fire on the platform due to a missing safety valve. Gas pressure had built up gradually through the course of the day, and by evening was at critical levels. A tiny spark was all it took to cause a massive explosion shortly after 10pm. The explosion and resulting fire led to the deaths of 167 out of the 226 men on board and the complete destruction of the rig itself. The fire was so intense that it could be seen for over 70 miles away. Piper Alpha remains the worst ever offshore accident in the history of oil production.
After the disaster, all oil companies looked long and hard at their practices and procedures. Safety became the paramount concern, and the subsequent enquiry by Lord Cullen produced a 500 page report with recommendations. One of the most important changes was the introduction of automatic shut-down valves, to starve a fire of fuel. Had these valves been in operation on Piper Alpha, the loss of life would have been considerably less. There have also been significant improvements in the design and manufacture of rigs and staff now working offshore report that the industry is increasingly safety aware. Some companies however perform better than others, and the onus is also on all staff and employees offshore to ensure that safety regulations are adhered to and that any problems are reported immediately to senior management. The workforce is now involved to a much higher degree in discussions about safety policy and in drawing up recommendations.
Oil drilling and exploration is constantly changing, and as the world’s demand for oil increases companies are looking to new regions or locations that were previously considered too difficult or expensive to access. The new HPHT wells could mean that companies can access difficult to reach oil reserves, but there will be additional concerns from both rig workers and people living nearby about the safety implications of extracting oil using these techniques. The legacy of Piper Alpha should go some way to ensuring that safety is always the prime consideration, wherever in the world oil companies are operating.
